I was in your mind, and I know. But I felt better as soon as I hit the open air. But somewhere in all that mess Chimera called his mind, he was angry at me. The traffic on Olive was still snarling by, and in the distance was music from one of the restaurants, but inside the Jeep it was quiet.
He just looked at me, his face closing down, hiding from me, because he was certain where I was going, what I would say. Just once, I'd like not to be the cleanup crew and be there early enough to have something left to rescue. If I can't have it, and you won't use it on anybody else, then I'll just ruin it. There'd been a point in my life when I would not have let him hold the door.
